Introduction to eBird (Save the date!)

On Thursday, June 7, 2012 yours truly will be giving a talk on using and contributing to eBird.  You should join us!

The talk will be near downtown Columbus, OH at the Grange Insurance Audubon Center (home of Columbus Audubon), and is co-sponsored by the Central Ohio Chapter of the American Society for Information Science & Technology.  See the announcement below for details.

P.S. If you can’t make this talk, I’ll be giving a similar talk at the East Central Ohio Audubon Chapter’s annual meeting (potluck at 6pm, talk begins at 7pm) the following Monday, June 11th at the College Town House on Broadway in Granville, OH. Members, friends, and the public are all welcome.

Introduction to eBird

Join us on Thursday evening, June 7th, 2012, for this spring program co-sponsored by CO-ASIS&T and the Grange Insurance Audubon Center.

SUMMARY: eBird ( is an increasingly popular internet-based checklist program that provides bird watchers a free and easy way to organize their bird sightings, keep checklists, and share their observations with others. This seminar will cover getting started with eBird, submitting observations, embedding photos in your checklists, and using eBird’s data visualization tools to explore the local birds or the birds you’ll likely encounter during your next vacation.  Librarians, beginning birders and seasoned experts are encouraged to attend! (See flier attached).

PRESENTER: Paul Hurtado, PhD

Paul is a Postdoctoral Fellow at OSU’s Mathematical Biosciences Institute & Aquatic Ecology Laboratory. He is an avid birder and experienced user of eBird.

    So disappointed that I will not be able to attend either of your eBird talks — previous commitments that will probably not be nearly as interesting! If you’re able, please do let me know if you plan any more. I’m an eBird novice but am rapidly becoming addicted. Just went outside to take a pic of the gorgeous sunset and heard a great horned owl. I’ll report it as “incidental” and hope they don’t get too irritated with me. I like your new blog (also interested in all aspects of nature!), and good luck with your talks.
